Abstract
Purpose : In a hard-coated lens which front surface is plane(¥ã= ¡Ä) we measured the thickness and the refractive index of coated film without damaging the film.

Methods : He-Ne laser light, which was collimated using lenses, was applied to the film through Gadolinium Gallium Garnet(G.G.G.) prism. Some modes of the incident light were observed with m-th lines. The distance between these lines was measured by prism-film coupler method using a photo-detector.

Result : The film thickness is ~2.42 §, the refractive index is ~1.60 in TE mode and the film thickness is ~2.55 §, the refractive index is ~1.60 in TM mode. The average thickness of the film measured using two polarized modes(TE & TM modes) is ~2.49 §.

Conclusions : The value(~2.49 §) shows 5.5% difference compared to the thickness measured using an electron microscope.
